Does every swimmer need a noseplug?

underwaterA noseclip is a small bent piece of wire covered in rubber. French champion Virginie Didieu never uses it, but this ability is widely considered unique. The noseclip may look ugly, but it is the most important piece of equipment for synchro swimmers. Noseclips serve one purpose - to keep water out of the of athlete's nose. Most athletes also carry a spare noseclip inside their suits, just above the hip, in case the primary noseclip is dislodged during the swim.

Synchro hairdo

HairdoThe stuff in swimmers' hair is unflavored Knox gelatin, similar to that which is used in jell-o and cheesecake. The purpose is to keep the athlete's hair out of her face. It is applied as a warm, thick paste, hardens while air-drying, and is washed out in very hot water following the competition. Before Knox, swimmers used Vaseline, waterproof hair spray, or Dippity-doo hair gel.

Can we hear music under water?

Synchronized swimming teams use special underwater speakers hung approximately one meter below the water surface. Actually, sound travels better through water than through air. But the athletes are usually trained to perform their routine counting one to eight, it works great with or without music.

How long can we stay under water?

Normally, during a five-minute routine, swimmers may spend up to one minute underwater at a time. Elite level synchro swimmers can swim more than 75m underwater without coming up for air and spend up to four minutes holdind their breath during a routine. It is not recomended to beat the record, because the human abilities have their limits here and doing that you risk to fall asleep and never come up alive.

Do they really swim with their eyes wide open?

Synchronized swimmers perform with their eyes open underwater and during the competitions swimming goggles are not permitted . By seeing their teammates, athletes are able to make corrections to alignment and set up for specific moves in their routine. When spinning upside down, synchro swimmers spot the pool walls, just like a figure skater, dancer or diver would, to count rotations.
